Porter's Injury

Last Thursday night we decided to stop by Matt's moms house to visit his sister who was in town visiting. We planned on making it a quick trip so that we could get the boys home and give them baths and get them in bed. The boys wanted to go outside and play, so Matt offered to take them out. Matt was helping Max go across the monkey bars and saw Porter climb up the ladder on the other side. It was only 3 rungs and a few feet off the ground, so Matt helped Max get down. Before he could turn around to get Porter down, he heard a thud and a snap and instant blood curdling screaming. He picked Porter up, but noticed that his leg looked funny. As he ran him to me, he could feel a popping in his right leg. We decided not to waste any time and hopped in the car to drive to the ER at Primary Childrens Hospital. After a long, painful drive up to Primary's, we had to brave the ER. They checked us in immediately, but we still had to wait. Poor little Porter was in soo much pain. After a long wait, they got us back to Radiology. They instantly knew that it was pretty bad. They got us into a room and said that the Pediatric Orthopedics would be down to see us. They ended up giving him an IV finally and some morphine. It took the edge off, but not enough to get him out of pain and definitely not enough to get him to sleep. We finally talked to Ortho and they said that he had a spiral fracture in his femur on his right leg. We couldn't believe it! How could he fracture his femur from a few feet off the ground. They thought that he must have caught his foot somehow and it twisted as he fell. Crazy!! So from that news, they would need to take him into surgery to reset the bone and put him into a cast. He went into surgery around 1:00 a.m., and after the longest hour ever, he came out in a spica cast! So, for the next six weeks he will be stuck in this crazy cast. He basically can't move at all on his own. They say that after a few weeks he may try and roll. And maybe after 5 weeks or so, he may try and hobble around. So, we are in for a very very long six weeks!! We spent the night at the hospital; but neither Matt or I slept at all. We finally headed home around 9:30 the next morning. Porter is doing soo well. He spends a lot of time sitting on the couch or in our laps. But he has really been so sweet. The first day he said, "Get me out" and "I'm stuck" a few times. But now he realizes that it's not going anywhere for a while. He is such a sweet little guy and we are soo lucky that he has such a good attitude.

Here's a picture of the first day back from the hospital. :( He doesn't look too happy :(

And here's a few pictures of the next day. :) Already much happier and wanting to get down and play :) The bean bags and the egg chair have been awesome. It gives him a little variety.
Yes, that is a bar going right across the middle of his legs :) Not fun! It makes it very difficult to pick him up. But it is there to support the cast. And the diaper situation is not fun at all either. The diaper on top that you see is a "just in case" diaper. Because underneath is a cut-out just big enough to tuck a diaper in. Not big enough to stick the sides together though. And since a lot of his time is spent laying down, it doesn't really do the trick at stopping the pee from leaking. Not fun. We are trying different options, but haven't had a lot of luck. He is actually been really good at letting us know when he has to go #2, so we can get him onto the toilet. Who knows, maybe he will be potty trained by the end of this.
He also loves riding in the car. Primary Children's let us borrow a car seat that actually fits him! So, he loves to ride in the car and get out of the house. We just realized that he still fits in his stoller too. So we will definitely be taking some walks. So far, so good. We will see how the next 5 1/2 weeks go. Wish us luck.

Porter has been such a sport with everything. I feel so bad for him. I love that little guy. He looks so big in the pictures. He's growing up so quick. I love when he comes over that he tells me "I have my cast on"..as if he has a choice to take it off. He is such a cute little guy.

We love you Porter!! You are being such a good sport about this whole mess. Just keep asking mom if you can "hold her". (they grow up to fast; enjoy it!)
